“The Red Parrots”
Solo Exhibition
Giti Norouzian
The transmission of traits, from the color of the face, hair, and eyes to temperaments and illnesses, is the heritage of previous generations for humanity; from mother to child, and from that child to their descendants. Yet we, the inhabitants of this narrow, bustling, and challenging corner of the Earth, are heirs to suffering. No matter how our complexion varies, the pain remains the same. From one community to another, and from one generation to the next. We are all kindred: both related and empathetic. As the tale of one person’s pain awakens the pain of another. Pain is our covenant; just as whenever the parrots of the lord of Balkh recounted their stories to one another, they themselves were afflicted by pain. The present collection is a narration of anguish and a testament to the constriction and suffering that in recent years has become a shared experience for all. It transcended bodies and forms to assume an eternal visage. The world’s parrots, the Nowruzians, have been narrated and depicted countless times. Each time, they have been more thoroughly scrutinized, refined, and polished, until only the redness of their shared pain and the entanglement of their fate remained. Perhaps this knot may be untied, and these depicted reds may be freed from the interwoven skeins of their destiny.
